A "Mole" of Dollars

Mole Day is the unofficial celebration of Science by Chemistry teachers and students on October 23rd.  If celebrated at the true recognition time of 6:02, the resulting time and date is 6:02 10/23.  Avogadro's number (6.02 x 10^23) is the number of particles found in one Mole of a substance.

In honor of Mole Day, I am posting an activity provided by a Chemistry teacher during an informal observation earlier this week.  To introduce the value of one mole, students actively investigated the following with their peers:


Say you were given a "mole" of dollars when you were born (6.02 x 10^23).  If you spent a BILLION dollars per SECOND for your entire life, how much of your money would be left after you died, living to be 80 years-old?

  1. Its always really cool to see their reaction when they realize that rounding up they have exactly the same amount they started with even though they spent $2.5 x 10^18! I was really impressed with my 1st period figuring that out without much help :)
