Timely Self-Worth Reminder by Mike Barwis

All the talk recently (and by recently, I refer to the past few years) of educator pay in North Carolina has weighed heavily on many educators.  This is true of those in school leadership roles, as well. To be authentic, when the Department of a Public Instruction posted the Salary Schedule for 2014-2015 after the General Assembly's budget was signed into Bill, I was a bit discouraged myself.

Thankfully, I was reminded of true self-worth this morning by legendary strength coach Mike Barwis while watching a DVR'ed episode of his show American Muscle.  The message is undeniably worth sharing:

"The reality is...the position you stand in, have [has] nothing to do with your self-worth.  Worth is determined by character; worth is determined by intensity. Worth is determined by your effort, the drive you're willing to put in your life to sacrifice everything you have for everyone around you.  You do not find worth in dollars.  You will not find worth in position.  Your character will not be judged by the amount of money you have resting in your checking account.  It [Your character] will be judged by what you sacrifice for the other individuals on this Earth...before you leave."

Interestingly, the DVR'ed episode originally aired July 23rd.  I watched it today.

The words intensely spoken by Barwis at the end of the episode can be appreciated by anyone who believes their profession is a "calling"; Most educators do.

Today, I needed to hear this reminder of true self-worth.  Perhaps, there is someone else who needs to hear it, too.
