Leadership: "Under Our Watch"

"Allowed to happen under his watch."

Level I Violation for "failing to monitor a member of his staff."

These are the indicated faults of a prominent college basketball head coach, recently announced publicly.  As a Principal, I can't help but examine these indictments and easily transfer the statements to School Leadership.

Anything that happens within the framework of the team and the program, you are responsible for.

Substitute "school" for "team and the program."

Anything that happens within the framework of the school, you are responsible for.

Leadership accountability requires responsibility and ownership of others' actions.  The ownership of another individual's misjudgment, wrongdoing, or misconduct is a part of being held accountable in a managerial structure.  Fair or unfair, this responsibility falls to the top.

Be reminded: "Allowed to happen under his watch." is the indictment.

We, as Principals, Lead Learners, and School Executives, are responsible for anything and everything that occurs within our respective school's framework.

It's an extremely challenging position to be in.

No one ever said being a leader was easy.
