In light of the recent tragedy at Stoneman Douglas High School, I'm sure many of you are aware of the National School Walkout planned for March 14th. It is extremely important for Lake Norman Charter, as an educational institution, to remain neutral in all political matters.
We respect the rights of our students and staff to express their opinions peacefully. I have engaged in extensive dialogue with some of our students, as well as a network of school leaders outside of LNC.
We will support our high school students if they desire to participate in the National School Walkout with my expectations for a safe and orderly school environment to be followed.
Students who choose to participate in the March 14th National School Walkout will be allowed to leave the classroom at 10:00 AM and report directly to the mutually agreed location. They are expected to leave the classroom quietly and in an orderly fashion.
Students are expected to cause no disruption beyond the basic act of walking out of the classroom.
Students will be expected to use the 17 minutes as a moment to share their grief on behalf of the victims of the Parkland HS shooting and as an expression of unity.
Any harassment or maltreatment of students who participate will not be tolerated. Furthermore, any harassment to non-participants will not be tolerated.
Students can and are encouraged to take the initiative to inform their 3rd Period teacher in advance if they plan on participating in the National School Walkout.
Students will be properly supervised during the 17 minutes and will be expected to return to class by 10:20 AM.
Normal school policies and procedures are expected to be followed by all students, especially the directives provided by administration. Students will be responsible for completing the work they miss.
