Chatting with N.C.'s Top Teacher: May 18, 2016
The #ncadmin chat motto is "Growing Great School Leaders". Last year, we began a new tradition of having the Burroughs-Wellcome Fund Teacher of the Year serve as a moderator for an #ncadmin chat. Each moderator has the autonomy to select their own topic of discussion, as well as the Wednesday evening the chat will occur.

Appreciating Dr. Tulbert's 'Gutsy' Post
"What is it like being designated as a low performing school?" by Dr. Carrie Tulbert
Many of you reading this blog post know Carrie Tulbert, either professionally or personally.
If you don't know Carrie Tulbert, she was the 2014 Wells Fargo North Carolina Principal of the Year. This past summer, to the surprise of many, she made the decision to accept the Principal position at Concord Middle School in Cabarrus County, becoming the fourth principal in five years. She has previously served as Principal of Mooresville Middle School in the Mooresville Graded School System.
One thing is for sure: You have to RESPECT her guts in her recent blog post.

First #ncadmin Chat of 2015-2016
I am pleased to announce the first #ncadmin chat of the 2015-2016 school year will be September 16th at 8:00 PM EST. Our topic will be "Leadership Best Practice in a New School". The #ncadmin chat cohort motto is "Growing Great School Leaders." Therefore, I believe we couldn't open up this year with a more appropriate topic.
This topic is notably personal, not only as co-founder of #ncadmin, but primarily because I am currently a first-year Principal myself.
Furthermore, we will have two tremendous Principals to facilitate the chat, both of which transitioned to new schools and new districts this summer. Both are greatly-respected and widely-recognized for their leadership and innovation, not only in North Carolina, but also nationally.

Advanced Placement Testing: What a Difference One Year Makes
In alignment with our School Improvement Plan, I have spent the past two-years analyzing and studying our Advanced Placement data, specifically the low-participation of Advanced Placement testing compared to the high-participation of AP course enrollment.
The North Carolina General Assembly provided all North Carolina high school students an immense opportunity for 2014-2015 by covering all testing fees. (Related blog post from October: Advanced Placement Test Participation and Opportunity in North Carolina)
At Ashbrook High School, we utilized alumni, teachers, guidance counselors, and parents to share the vast benefits of taking and succeeded on Advanced Placement exams during Parent-Teacher Conferences throughout the school-year.

Senate Bill 121: The Excellence in School Leadership Act
I want to thank all members of the General Assembly for the service to their respective communities and the entire population of North Carolina.
On February 25, Senate Bill 121, also known as "The Excellence in School Leadership Act" was filed, sponsored by Senator J. Tillman (R-Moore, Randolph). Sen. Tillman serves as the Majority Whip, but he is also a retired school administrator. Therefore, it is no astonishment that he sponsored a Bill looking out for the best interest of Principals and Assistant Principals.

Follow-Up to 'Hashtag' Presentation at Conference (Internal Blog Post to GCS Admin in July)
Fellow GCS School Leaders,
This post serves as a connection to my topic during the "round-table" discussions at our conference in June. I discussed the value of effectively using "hashtags" for professional growth through Twitter. I frequently referenced #ncadmin throughout the discussion as an example and utilized this to demonstrate how the hashtag organizes tweets with a common theme or topic.
